First Man, directed by Damien Chazelle, who has also directed The Great Gatsby, is a stunning movie with great visuals, but it lacks enough dialogue to carry the movie. The movie, based on the book by James R. Hansen, describes Neil Armstrong’s life through the lens of the space program. The movie has stunning visuals, putting the audience in the movie. Although it lacks telling emotion, it is at times strong for Neil Armstrong. In a crucial part of the movie, Gemini 8 starts rotating uncontrollably, and everyone on screen except for Janet Jackson, played by Claire Foy, is showing fear of losing her husband. The people in mission control make this emergency seem as if it’s another day at the office, but other versions of the scene, such as the TV show For All Mankind, show them cheering afterwards. This is most likely done to put more of a focus on Neil. What is often depicted as a \u201cheroic\u201d tale is perceived in the movie as a chore. I would have personally enjoyed seeing a bit of dramatization out of the biopic, which was what the movie lacked. Performances were largely mediocre due to the movie telling a story through visuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movie’s soundtrack stood out to me. Composed by Justin Hurwitz, the music takes multiple approaches, making effective use of synth or percussion. For me, the landing has this silent tension, which is further enforced by the sound in the background. At the very end, Armstrong comes to terms with his late daughter, which concludes in a fulfilling way. The movie lacks thorough dialogue and not enough to carry the film, much like 2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>, but unlike 2001<\/em>, the visuals and sound are more impressive.
